How she ended up doing this: “I’m a trained esthetician and I was working at a spa. I realized I wasn’t doing enough for the clients. A regular facial can only do so much, with lasers you can do amazing things.”

People’s reaction to learning about her profession: “People are shocked when they find out what I do. At first they don’t understand. It’s not a typical career, you know, to be a laser Specialist. After the shock wears off they always ask me more about it and tell me which areas of their bodies they want to laser. It’s amazing how many people have been considering laser hair removal, or other laser cosmetic sessions. Some have been ‘thinking about it’ for years!”

The most common question clients ask: “They always want to know if getting lasered hurts. I tell them, yeah, it hurts a little, but it’s so worth it. None of our sessions take more than 30 minutes to an hour, and us women, are used to the discomfort from constant waxing, plucking, tweezing and threading. Besides, even a great massage ‘hurts,’ but isn’t it worth it?”

Area women laser most: “Full legs, Brazilian bikini and upper lip or chin”

Area men laser most: “Chest, shoulders and back”

During laser treatments . . . : “I chit chat with the clients, it’s almost like a therapy session for them. With our female clients, we’re often chatting about guys and dating. Sometimes my male clients ask me for advice on how to better interact with women. Getting to know clients is really the best part of my job.”

The most common thing clients say: “They always think they’re the hairiest people I’ve ever seen. They’re always wrong, there’s always someone hairier than you! Trust me.”

Her best advice for great skin: “Always remove your makeup and wash your face at night. Also, and this is a big one, you have to put on moisturizer before your skin gets dry. The water on your face really helps the moisturizer penetrate. If your face is dry and you want to moisturize, you should splash water on your face first.”

Microdermabrasion is: “Amazing. It’s a very light sanding of the top layer of your face. The microdermabrasion machine has a diamond tip wand that does an intense exfoliation. Customers leave with a flushed face, but by the evening they are glowing.”

How does a laser facial feel: “It’s gives you that sensation you get from sitting in the sun. It’s warm and soothing. It evens out your skin tone and diminishes scars and minimizes pores.”

Her favorite place to vacation: “Mexico.”

Her favorite place to shop: Saks Fifth Avenue.

Last book she read: True Blood by Patricia Waddell

Her favorite food: “Pizza, of course; this is New York! Plain, just cheese.”

She can’t live without: “Family, friends and moisturizer.”

Her opinion on hairy men: “I don’t like them one bit.”

The most common excuse used to put off doing laser hair removal: “Money. People usually think it’s too expensive for them. The price has come down like mad in the last year. Many years ago, I was working at another center and we charged $9,000 for full body laser treatment. Now, you can get the same thing for $449 a month. That means you could laser every body part from your upper lip to your toes. With the average client paying for their treatments over 6-8 months, they’re saving 70% of the price of the same laser treatment 5 years ago. Well, that’s the deal at Assara at least. If you go elsewhere who knows how much they’ll overcharge you.”

What scares people about laser hair removal: “They’re worried about scarring and pain. They think the laser might penetrate and do crazy things inside their bodies. One lady even asked me if she would get radiated! That’s ridiculous. It’s been proven safe by the FDA! Not to mention, I’ve been doing laser treatments with Assara for five years. In this city, filled with clients with very discriminating tastes, we could not continue to do business, if the service did not work, and work effectively.”
