Scientific Study Proves Microdermabrasion Is Totally Awesome

Hey Y’all,

I’ve been singing the praises of microdermabrasion for skin rejuvenation ever since I had my first scrub.

And now, I thought you should know, some fancy researchers at the University of Michigan have decided to copy my findings: “rough buffing of the skin does a better job of removing wrinkles and acne scars and stimulating healing than a gentler rubbing.” (If you want to get all technical, you can read the study in the October issue of Archives of Dermatology.)

Basically, microdermabrasion works wonders because the more “damage” induced to the skin, the stronger the body’s repair response. So unfortunately, all those soothing apricot scrubs and salt rubs you overpaid for at your local spa weren’t good for much more than relaxation.

Microderm is promoted as a good way to improve the appearance of wrinkles, acne scars, skin discoloration and other signs of aging skin… and now (as if the anecdotal proof were not enough) there’s scientific proof that it’s not just hype! It turns out that a more aggressive approach (microdermabrasion) helps the skin generate more collagen, which improves the appearance of skin, making it look plumper and softer.

“This research gives us the basis to believe that aggressive microdermabrasion abrasion could potentially result in beneficial effects like we see in other more aggressive procedures,” said a researcher from the University of Michigan.

The procedure involves buffing the skin with a diamond tip wand and it really is the gold standard for looking and feeling ‘refreshed’ and rested. There’s no downtime; your skin heals quickly- I had a treatment this morning and I’m going to work with only a little redness, fading quickly by this afternoon.

After a microdermabrasion session, I look in the mirror and I see a little redness and I look like I just took a 2-hour nap with my head nestled in a soft pillow on a Sunday afternoon, you know the look?  When I apply moisturizer I my skin feels incredibly smooth. Microdermabrasion just seems to make things look better, it softens the tiny lines, cleans pores deeply, helps scars to rejuvenate.

This could be the treatment that saves my skin… And yours…

Microdermabrasion can be a beautiful procedure for a patient looking to get rid of unwanted facial features. It is nice to see an article like this being put out so any potential clients can gain valuable insight. And with the recovery time next to zero, how can you go wrong?

I actually didn’t think this was the case either. My feeling was that rough rubbing of the face was going to be tough on my skin and that I would look red and my face would feel overly sensitive. Turns out I was wrong. I had a little redness, but it cleared up within about 20 minutes. After two sessions and buying a rough loofa for exfoliation at home (combined with a good moisturizer), I’m very happy with the results. I actually got quite a few complements that my face looked much clearer.
