Shaving usually gets a bad rap… With good reason, since it’s messy, repetitive, makes you hairier and gives you ingrown hairs and stubble. Okay, inhale… exhale… Now the latest from the Shaving Sucks files is this unfortunate news item:

“A 37 year-old Florida woman caused an accident when she tried to shave her bikini while driving. The woman was on her way to see her boyfriend. The crash only resulted in minor injuries but the woman was arrested the week earlier for driving under the influence.”

Gross, weird and unfortunate. That’s what I think about that. Now, if this Florida had attended to her grooming properly, she could have avoided this incident… But something tells me this woman has bigger problems now…

A few days ago I blogged an answer to a reader question about Brazilian bikini hair removal. A recently divorced 38-year-old emailed asking about her new younger man’s shock at discovering her of grooming in the bikini area. She wondered if she was just hopelessly outdated. “Should I get with the times and go hairless?” She asked. How could this nice 38-year-old know what the current grooming standard is? Things are constantly changing in genital grooming department!

I advised her to try “going Brazilian,” and some readers didn’t like the advice. “Why is a man’s shock at a woman’s hair her problem?” One reader emailed.

Obviously “his problem” isn’t “her problem” but my goal was (and still is) to demystify the notion that being smooth “down-there” is NOT merely something for nymphos, strippers or silly women hell bent on man-pleasing.

When I said “grooming down-there is considered on a par with manicures blow drying and eyebrow plucking,” I didn’t mean that if you don’t do those things or have a hairless bikini you should “immediately throw in the towel and die of shame” as one reader wrote.

For real women, the point is NOT to try to look like an adult film star. Neither is the point to idiotically conform to an irritating aesthetic ideal. It’s simply a choice to groom for sex appeal! Further than this, being well-groomed “down there” makes hygiene easier and prevents funky odors caused by pubic hair. (Not to mention being hairless feel GRRRRREAT!)

Experimenting with a walk on the bare side can actually be fun and confidence boosting! And, the most effective way to keeping groomed without dealing with the hassle of constant shaving is laser hair removal. If you try to go Brazilian by shaving, waxing or plucking you’ll end up with red bumps and ingrown hairs. . . . Which might be the only thing worse than a bushy bush.

It seems I’ve ignited a little controversy with my post on completely bare bikini lines. People have emailed me saying it’s weird, awesome, gross, sexy, etc. . . .

This reminded me of an article I read about this topic in the New York Times a couple years ago. It was called “The Revised Birthday Suit”. The article was written at the beginning of the bald bikini trend, so the tone was a little ‘oh-my-god-I-can’t-believe-people-actually-do-this!’

But that was then and this is now, people have come around to the hair-free bikini. Today, the Brazilian bikini, that leaves a tiny triangle or strip of hair seems old-fashioned. Why hold on to those few straggly dark curly hairs? Why? Why? Why?

The source in the article is a 24 year-old grad student who had spent $2,500 on five laser hair removal sessions only on her bikini. Wow! It’s amazing how much the price has come down since then, (at least at Assara! Some place continue to overcharge clients like it’s 1995!)

The NYT article posits that many attributed the bald bikini trend to the fact that pornography has become so mainstream and all porn-starts seems to have bare bikinis. Personally, I don’t think it has to do with the ‘mainstreamificaiton’ of porn. I mean porn stars also wear 6-inch Lucite platform heels and we don’t see people latching on to that trend, do we?

But, I think one can more reasonably attribute this to fashion trends promoting skimpy undies and bathing suits, and low-rise jeans (imagine having hair sticking out over your waist line? OMG…).

The bare bikini is the most practical, the most aesthetically pleasing and the most pleasurable. As the NY Times article says “There’s an erotic, sexual component to hairlessness because your skin is more sensitive when it’s more exposed.” Nuff said.

Now that the price of laser hair removal has come down from those astronomical prices, there’s no reason not to do it! I don’t need to tell you that laser hair removal is a growing trend.  In 1994 about 1.4 million Americans had it done, a 53 percent increase over 2003 (source: American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery).

Obviously, I don’t tell everyone I have a bare bikini, so when I went to the gynecologist last week I was a little nervous. When I spread my legs for the exam, I braced myself for a gasp or at least a little throat clearing. Would this old lady doctor think I was promiscuous? Weird? Part of some sex cult that enforces hair free vaginas… Of course, she told me that many of her patients have no hair down-there and that it actually made her job easier. Ahhh relief! So the only woman other than my boyfriend who sees my bare bikini give it the seal of approval!

Hello People!

It’s come to my attention that I’ve never really written about getting Brazilian bikini laser hair removal treatments. I’ve mentioned that the hair-free bikini has become completely desirable and totally not reserved for pole dancers and the like. Many, many of my friends (and I don’t mean only the man-crazy ones) have resorted to removing all their bikini hair.

The topic came up because we were lounging on the Sundeck at the Reebok Gym and we spotted this skinny model-looking girl with (brace yourselves) spindly black hairs poking out from her bikini bottom. One of my friends exclaimed “we might need to call pest control; there are spiders crawling out from her bikini!”

“It’s just much more convenient to remove it all,” another friend said. “And you never get THAT,” she added, gesturing to the model with the unfortunate wardrobe malfunction.

So everyone and their sister are sporting the Brazilian now, but HOW you do it is crucial. I mean, do you want to be going to the spa to get your hair ripped out with hot wax once a month for the rest of your life? And let’s say you’re busy and forget to go, does that mean you’ll be back in the safari gazing at a herd of angry wild yaks? I’m sure you’d be mortified, and so would I.

Laser beaming your complete bikini isn’t painful, it feels like waxing, but it’s PERMANENT.

I guess its obvious that I go to Assara, which is located in New York, NY where I find the girls are completely cool. They’re not a hundred years old like the women at other laser places, so they understand what you want. One of the specialists at Assara was actually the one who first introduced me to the Brazilian bikini. In the most subtle, polite way she asked how much hair I would like to leave on . . .  And the rest is history as they say.

Anyway, if you get up the nerve to go Brazilian you’ll never go back, and with laser hair removal you’ll never have to!

PS. Another slightly more trivial reason to take it all off is that you’ll never see those curly little black hairs you sometimes find in your food or in your sheets. You know the ones that make you lose your appetite or worse . . .  With a lasered Brazilian it’s smooth sailing from now on!
