Hope you’re enjoying the crisp fall weather! What better time to curl up with a stack of magazines and drink one of those new Starbucks Via instant coffees. Have y’all tried them? I like instant coffee anyway, so you could say it’s no big surprise that I like Via, but this is some serious instant coffee. Anyway, enough with the free plugs for Starbucks…

Let’s get back to my stack of magazines. I love seeing all the retouched pictures of celebrities and reading the pathetically phony denials of plastic surgery. So I was pleasantly surprised when I got to my Harper’s Bazaar and read this quote about lasers from the always hilarious and adorable Tina Fey.

“You can point any kind of laser at my face, but I don’t think Botox is for me. I think it is bad.” In other words, Tina isn’t afraid of lasers!

Of course, Fey, who’s 39 years-old, looks fresh and adorable on the cover of Harper’s, but you could chalk that up to hours of creative photoshop. But I’ve actually seen Tina in person and I can vouch for her looking really great. Yeah, she’s pretty and petite, but what I’m talking about is her skin, which I got to see with my own eyes.

True story: I was walking by Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan where her show 30 Rock was filming a scene outside. I rubber necked it and got a glimpse of the pint-sized comedienne. She’s actually stunning, and looking nothing like what you imagine 39 looks like.

Fey knows the power of laser facials and laser skin rejuvenation to diffuse redness, make your skin look more even and smooth out fine line wrinkles. So she knows it, I know it, now what about y’all?

What To Do Before My Laser Hair Removal Appointment?

Ok, I have an appointment Friday for some laser hair removal. Am I supposed to shave my legs like normal, or am I supposed to leave some stubble so the laser has something to zap at. I don’t want to show up unprepared either way. Thanks for the help!

Answer:

Hi!

Before getting treated, you should shave the area 1-3 days before your appointment. Do not use any other methods of removing hair at least 4-6 weeks prior. Laser hair removal works by targeting hair shafts and destroying them. The laser needs a root to target and destroy. Shaving cuts excess hair allowing the laser to concentrate its energy on the root only, not wasting any energy on hair above the skin’s surface; waxing or other methods of hair removal pull the hair and root out, leaving nothing for the laser to target.

For areas such as the bikini area for women and the neckline for men, if you have hard to see hair, it is best to shave closer to 3 days before your treatment so that some stubble grows back and the specialist can follow your hairline.

Avoid the sun, as the paler your skin, the more effective the laser treatment, as the laser is designed to target the melanin in your hair. An increase in melanin in your skin as a result of sun exposure will reduce the effectiveness of the laser. You should also avoid using self-tanning creams and sprays.

Do not apply any makeup, lotions or creams immediately prior to your appointment.

The same guidelines apply between treatments. Be sure to ask your specialist what to expect and if there are any other special preparations he or she would like you to take. An open dialogue with your specialist is key to a good experience and great results.

Laser hair removal costs usually vary from person to person and depend on many factors, including more obvious factors such the amount of hair and the area to be treated, as well as less obvious factors, such as the color and coarseness of the hair and hereditary factors.

Prices also vary between centers, though it would not be prudent to pick based only on price, as results may vary widely based on the quality of the center, a technician’s level of experience, the type of laser being used, and whether several treatments are being purchased (most clinics will offer discounts if several treatments are purchased at the same time).

On average, one should expect to pay between $70-$150 per treatment for the upper lip. We normally recommend between 5 and 7 treatments.

OMG! Is all I Can Say Y’all!

Since I’m into laser hair removal, a lot of my friends tell me I’m too obsessed with excess hair.

Well, if you thought YOU had a little excess hair, think again! This poor guy Yu Zhenhuan, once held the dubious title of the hairiest man in the world… Now, he’s planning an extreme make-over using laser hair removal to get himself looking… um… what? Better? More normal? Poor guy…

“I just want to prove that I have talent and I don’t need this hair to be someone,” said Yu, who used to have hair covering 98% of his body.

Obviously there was no other solution than laser hair removal… And all I can say is that I’m embarrassed that I ever complained about a few little hairs here and there. Good luck to this guy… I don’t think anyone will ever be more grateful than him to have discovered laser hair removal!

Were you at the Assara Open House? I Was!

Hi Y’all,

By you know I’m a BIG fan of the lasers for laser hair removal and laser facials . . . . I consider it a great personal victory when I’m able to get a friend to try laser hair removal. The hardest part is convincing them to just try it once. After that, the results speak for themselves and my job is done!

The problem is that getting people to try it can be hard. Who has time? Who can plan ahead, especially for something they’re skeptical about? So I was so happy when I heard that Assara Laser (my laser center of choice in NYC!) was having an open house.

Of course, yours truly was invited, as Assara’s greatest fan journalist. ever.

Last night, they opened the door to their laser centers, here in New York City. Each of their laser specialists were providing FREE laser sessions, and teaching people about lasers and how they work.

There was wine, hors d’oeuvres and music! I got my friend Miriam to try laser hair removal on her leg (she’s the one with the purple ballet flats in the photos below). I also took some pics of Assara Laser Specialist, Liz, zapping away the hairs. No big surprise, Miriam was shocked at how little pain there was (she’s used to the rip and burn of waxing!). Miriam was also shocked at how little time it took.

The best thing my job: “I like to make people happy and that’s what I do here. If you’re happy, I’m happy.”

Why I was recruited to Assara: “I’m a trained medical assistant and, over time, working with very sick patients wore down on me. I wanted to work in a specialized field, and one that was more focused on light, happy things. Here, all I do is make people happy by improving their physical appearance and self confidence. Washing thoroughly and moisturizing is not enough though, you need to use a great toner that does not contain alcohol, which dries out your skin. Toner ensures that you removed the entire film of cleanser residue. The toner also has a tightening and cooling effect, closing your pores and making your skin feel fresh and healthy.”

New York Insiders Discuss Laser Hair Removal and Their Grooming Habits

Hi Y’all!

I was watching this girl talk clip where some New York women were discussing their grooming regimens and beauty rituals, which included waxing and laser hair removal in NYC laser hair removal centers.

From eyelash extensions, to scotch-tape face lifts and blow-dries three times a week, these girls showed themselves to be very high maintenance . . .

The first words out of one girl’s mouth were“I really don’t do anything that extreme” and then she goes on to brag about her WEEKLY visits to the hair salon and FREQUENT mani-pedi’s. Fine, so her habits aren’t EXTREME in the Mountain Dew Code-Red sense. But, then she sheepishly reveals that she does her hair removal herself, at home, with hot wax. Um . . . I understand wanting to save money by not getting things professionally done, but why is it okay to refer to professionals for the hair on your head and the dead skin on your feet but when it comes to seriously important areas like underarms, legs and bikini she rips it off do-it yourself-style with hot wax? On what planet does that make any sense?

This misguided gal then goes on the defensive about her at-home waxing explaining that she swam competitively in high school. “When you’re on a swim team you have to be clean and shaven, so I learned how to take care of myself,” she said. Okay, but why not permanently remove your leg, underarm and bikini hair instead of wasting time and money waxing and justifying how high maintenance you are? (Besides, waxing is far from perfect). Maybe she’s afraid of lasers?

Being high maintenance is a chore in itself (I know this first hand!). Although it can be relaxing and fun to go to the salon and spa every week or so for plucking, waxing and threading, in the long run it’s a chore and a bore, and a huge waste of time. Think of the enjoyment of actually being out there living LIFE instead of cooped up in that salon? You could go to a laser hair removal place a couple of times and be hair free FOREVER… (I’m biased; I had great services at Assara so that’s what I suggest.)

Now, I’m addressing the girls in the video here (and anyone else who identifies with them): Get out of that salon and get started on laser hair removal ASAP!
